    Three Finalists Chosen for ABC’s Young Professional of the Year Award

    Chris Beckering, Greg Schniegenberg and Shon Smith all come from different states, work for different companies, and represent different roles in the construction industry, but on Nov. 11, they will all have one thing in common. During ABC’s Future Leaders Awards Ceremony, Chris, Greg and Shon will stand on stage in San Diego as a finalist for the first-annual ABC Young Professional of the Year award.

    Fortune Lists ABC Members on 100 Best Places to Work For Millennials

    In its inaugural list of the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials, Fortune magazine listed eight ABC member companies representing 24 ABC chapters as the best-of-the-best workplaces for young professionals. Administered by Great Place to Work Institute, more than 90,000 millennial employees from 465 companies nationwide were surveyed in order to select the top 100 winners.

    YP Member Spotlight: Dan Forget

    Dan Forget, a member of the ABC National Young Professionals Program, is a senior project manager for Sieve Contractors, an ABC member company specializing in pre-engineered building erection, standing seam roofs, plant maintenance, crane services, and general contracting in Washington, Mo. Forget has been with Sieve for seven years and currently works on project development with owners, estimating, and managing the field crews. Forget is involved with the ABC Heart of America Chapter and is the National Grassroots committee’s 2015 national chairman. He graduated from Missouri State in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management and is on the board of Gateway Trout Unlimited. 

    7 Ways to Turn Your Employees into Leaders

    Organizations looking to gain a competitive advantage in their industry and increase their bottom-line metrics can look to investing in one thing—their people. In fact, a study titled “Global Leadership Forecast” cited that “companies with quality leaders are 13 times more likely to outshine the competition.” The same study also found that only 18 percent of responders reported strong bench strength, meaning they believe only 1 in 5 leaders can meet their future needs. Instead of waiting to see which employees become leaders, create an environment that develops them into the leaders they need to be.

    YP Member Spotlight - Chris Carvelli

    Chris Carvelli, an account executive for Enterprise Fleet Management, has been with Enterprise for more than 10 years since graduating from LaSalle University. Carvelli has been involved with the ABC Delaware Chapter for four years and has served as the chapter’s young professional committee co-chair for two years. With the committee co-chair Brian Martinenza of Services Unlimited, Inc., Carvelli and the committee have built a strategic plan for 2015 for the group whose goal is to add value to the young professionals and to chapter members in order to better themselves and ultimately their businesses.

    ABC Florida Gulf Coast Names Their YP of the Year

    Scott Cox, vice president and director of preconstruction services for Cox Fire Protection, Tampa, Fla., was named ABC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter’s Young Professional (YP) of the Year during their 2015 Excellence in Construction awards. Cox was recognized for his role in co-founding and co-chairing the chapter’s NexGen program, serving on the chapter’s marketing committee and for his position on ABC’s National Young Professional Committee.

    Reducing Uncertainty and Improving Performance with BIM

    In a recent report, McGraw Hill Construction discusses the top causes of uncertainty in construction projects and their effects on the schedule and cost of the projects. Once the top causes were identified, the report dives into ways an entire team from the owner, to the architects and the contractors can improve performance.

    Young Professional Spotlight: Brooke Wenger

    Brooke Wenger is the Business Development Leader for the Eastern Region of Triad Engineering, Inc., a multi-discipline engineering firm with offices across the mid-Atlantic region.  She earned her Business Administration with a focus on Marketing and Management degree from Penn State University. As an active member of ABC Cumberland Valley Chapter (CVC), Brooke contributed to the formation of their Young Professionals Group and serves as chair. Brooke is a participant of the ABC National Business Development Peer Group. She is also President of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS).

    It’s no secret that companies are facing generational gaps within their workforce, inside and outside of the construction industry. It is important to understand this challenge and promote ways for young professionals to continue developing into high-performing employees and leaders. Retaining the younger generation entering the workforce can be done effectively and without making a large financial investment. 

    Young Professional Member Receives Florida Gulf Coast Chapter Award

    During their annual “Toast the New Year” event on Jan. 8, the ABC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter honored National Young Professional Committee member, David Turcios with their “Member of the Year” award. The award recognizes a member’s outstanding contribution to the advancement of the principles and practices of the merit shop philosophy.
