Ryan is the Corporate QA/QC Manager for Starcon International, a full service mechanical contractor in the petrochemical industry, and has been working in the industry for over eight years. Ryan started as an intern with Starcon, and was hired on full-time in 2007 after graduating with a Construction Management degree from Western Illinois University. Ryan has held multiple roles with Starcon that has contributed to his development, such as Field Engineer, Estimator and Maintenance Superintendent. Ryan enjoys the challenges the industry delivers regarding work scopes involving the National Board Inspection Code, ASME Codes and managing compliance with Starcon & client procedures. He is a certified welding inspector (CWI) and holds the Boiler Repairers License for the State of Michigan. Ryan lives in Lockport, Ill., with his wife Nicole and their eight month old son, Connor.
Q1: How did you get into the construction industry?
A1: I was first introduced to the construction industry by my dad who has been involved in the industrial industry for his entire career with companies such as Unocal and Chevron. I chose to major in Construction Management in college and throughout my four years, my interest continued to grow and I knew that this was a career for me. I did internships with Starcon International during college and was fortunate enough to get hired full time upon graduation.
Q2: What’s one thing that surprised you about the industry?
A2: The incredible skillset individuals have that make them masters at their craft: welders, mechanics, carpenters, etc.
Q3: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A3: I enjoy sustaining and building the network team of people that work together to address the challenges the industrial industry presents.
Q4: How have you been involved with ABC?
A4: I am a new member to ABC. However, I have participated in Starcon’s organization of ABC training classes and team member nominations to participate in the local and national ABC Competitions.
Q5: What are you most looking forward to as you start working with the committee?
A5: I am looking forward to the goals that will be set and working with the team to achieve those goals and grow the committee.
Q6: What advice would you give to someone entering the industry?
A6: Be open to all options the industry offers. Be assertive in starting relationships to help build your networking structure.
