ABC’s Future Leaders Lab held Nov. 15-17 in Dallas, TX, brought together a group of more than 30 young leaders from around the country to expand their leadership development skills. The course, led by Young Pro Elite Founder, Blake Cavignac, covered six topics including a self-assessment, vision & goals, productivity, core beliefs & values, personal branding and adverse management.

In preparation for the upcoming Future Leaders Lab, ABC named the three finalists for ABC’s 2nd annual Young Professional of the Year Award who were selected among a group of nominees representing 20 ABC chapters across the country. Finalists were chosen based on their career achievement, leadership and vision for future industry enhancement.

As part of ABC’s ongoing efforts to elect pro-Merit Shop candidates to elected office and maintain a majority in the US Senate, association staff is conducting their second FEA Travel Team visit of the 2016 election cycle. Earlier this month, the team was in Florida to support the re-election campaign of Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and is currently deployed to Pennsylvania to encourage ABC members to get out the vote for Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA). Funded by ABC’s Free Enterprise Alliance, Travel Teams visit ABC member contractors in targeted states to deliver important Get Out The Vote materials and encourage support for ABC endorsed candidates. Once member company offices are closed for the day, Travel Teams volunteer at local campaign offices to conduct voter outreach. Between Florida and Pennsylvania, FEA Travel Teams will visit over 1000 member companies and commit approximately 160 volunteer hours to electing ABC-endorsed candidates.

Many young leaders in the industry can relate to construction management students who are trying to gain a competitive advantage as they prepare to enter the real world. At the ABC Pelican Chapter, they saw this as an opportunity to connect their young professional group with the ABC Student Chapter atLouisiana State University (LSU) to mentor them in hopes to bring home a win at the 2016 ABC National Construction Management Competition.

Adam Jesberger joined DPR Construction’s D.C. Metro office in March 2016 as a project engineer and where he is responsible for project communication such as RFI’s and submittals focused on interior commercial projects. In addition, he assists with the Special Services Group/Interiors department in estimating and procurement.

The ABC Iowa chapter is in its third year of hosting the Merit Shop Emerging Leaders Academy and recently held the group’s graduation for its 22 participants. Ranging from business owners and presidents to managers and foremen, the group meets for four day-long sessions from February through August. This year, the classes focused on self-awareness & emotional intelligence, leadership development, what ABC can do for young professionals, and technology in construction—a few of the main topics identified as important to the members in Iowa.

Members of Congress aren’t experts at construction and the issues that affect it. That’s where professionals in the industry come into play. While our congressmen and women are there to advocate for us, how do they know the significance of what they are advocating for if we don’t tell them? It is our job to tell our stories and be heard.
That’s what ABC Young Professionals learned June 22 during the first annual YP Symposium at ABC’s Legislative Week.

Andrew Lopez is vice president for Cajun Constructors, LLC, an ABC member and nationally recognized construction leader headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., that provides a broad range of services as a specialty contractor to a diverse group of markets. In our jobs, we tend to take on roles and projects that might not normally come with our title.
